Two statues of horse riders! On the left, The statue of Dom João I at Lisbon, Portugal. On the right, the statue of Maharajah Duleep Singh, at Thetford, England! King João seized the Portuguese throne in defiance of a Castillean (Spanish) heir, and his statue in Lisbon symbolises Portuguese independence. Duleep Singh was the last Sikh maharajah of Punjab, who lived much of his life in the Thetford area. His statue was raised to symbolise the long relationship between Britain and the Sikh people of India.
