Thetford Gaol Plaque

Thetford Gaol House.

Being an Assize town, Thetford needed a significant building to house the accused and convicts awaiting trial, execution, or transportation. Thetford Gaol House (gaol is the English spelling of Jail, but pronounced the same) was built on the infill where the original medieval market was held. Today, it is a private building, but bars on the upper windows, and this old plaque reveal its original nature.
