The mere was constructed at Flag Fen as an artificial lake - with the purpose of preserving the waterlogged conditions of the site, conserving the subsoil Bronze Age timbers of the post alignment and platform. A row of posts has been placed in one corner of the lake, crossing an artificial island - symbolising the Bronze Age alignment on a micro scale. A floating Bronze Age museum sits one end of the mere.
