William was born 8th January 1846 at Gressenhall Union Workhouse, the baseborn child of Eliza Baxter. William grew up to be a farm worker, and married Emily Barber. They had a total of nine children born between 1867 and 1885 at the workhouse, then Swanton Morley, and finally in East Dereham - all in Norfolk.
